Participation of civil society

Accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are welcome to participate as observers in the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on mercury.

NGOs represent a broad spectrum of interests, and embrace representatives from business and industry, environmental and public health groups, indigenous populations, local governments and municipal authorities, research and academic institutes, labour unions, women, gender and youth groups.

NGOs may be accredited either with the  United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) of UNEP with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) or directly with the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention.

NGOs previously accredited with the intergovernmental negotiating committee on mercury must request a new application for accreditation, unless already accredited with UNEA or ECOSOC.
