Second meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury (COP2)

The second meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury (COP2) will take place from 19 to 23 November 2018 at the International Conference Centre in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Conference will be preceded on Sunday 18 November by preparatory meetings, including regional and other meetings.

Intersessional work in follow up to COP1 is ongoing, and further information, including in relation to draft guidelines on interim storage of mercury and mercury compounds as well as to effectiveness evaluation may be found here


Invitations and pre-registration

Invitation letters (in English, FrenchSpanish) have been sent to all Governments through the official channels of communication with the UN Environment Programme, with copy to National Focal Points for the Minamata Convention as well as to permanent Missions to UN Environment Programme and to the UN in Geneva, as applicable. Invitations are also in the process of being extended to intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations.

Pre-registration should be completed no later than 19 August 2018 using the online platform that available here. 


Practical information for participants

Practical information, including on registration, credentials for Parties, participation of observers, accommodation and other logistical issues may be found here.

Participants are responsible for making their own accommodation arrangements in advance of the meeting and for covering any associated incurred costs. An updated list of hotels offering preferential rates to the United Nations is available here.


Credentials for Parties to the Convention

In order to take part in the decision-making process at the meeting of the Conference of the Parties, Parties to the Minamata Convention are kindly requested that their head of delegation, alternate representatives and advisers each be accredited in a credential issued either by the Head of State or Government or by the Minister of Foreign Affairs or, in the case of a regional economic integration organization, by the competent authority of that organization. Information regarding any change in the composition of the delegation should be submitted using the same procedure. Samples of credentials are available in the 6 UN languages below.
